Lufthansa Cargo has announced that it is delaying the construction of “LCCneo,” its new cargo centre at Frankfurt Airport.

The decision on the implementation of the project will be postponed for a minimum of two years, according to an LH statement.

“We can see that, after necessary enhancing measures with the existing infrastructure, Lufthansa Cargo can continue to work successfully for a few years whilst we can enhance the sound financial profile of Lufthansa Group with our Investment Grade Rating by postponing the ‘LCCneo,’” said Harry Hohmeister, chairman of Lufthansa Cargo AG’s supervisory board and member of Deutsche Lufthansa AG’s executive board.

Frankfurt Airport handled 2.1 million tonnes of freight in 2014 and was Europe’s busiest. Of the total 2014 throughput, approximately 1.37 million tonnes were handled by LH Cargo, which has a freighter fleet consisting of five Boeing 777Fs and 14 MD-11Fs.

Peter Gerber, chairman of Lufthansa Cargo AG’s executive board, said he didn’t think that the delay would have too big an impact on the company’s operations. “Even if we would have liked to realise the new construction as early as possible, we will still be able to continue our successful course even with this decision,” he said.
