The new flights will provide up to 23 tonnes of belly capacity each. Emirates expects to transport imports such as electronic goods, construction equipment and pharmaceuticals, as well as exports such as fresh produce and perishables.

Emirates first launched services to Nigeria in January 2004 with a four-times-weekly flight from Dubai to Lagos via Accra, using an Airbus A330-200. The flight became daily in October 2005, and in January 2006 Lagos was delinked from Accra.

The airline operated a second daily Lagos service between February 2009 and June 2016, and a daily Abuja flight between August 2014 and October 2016.
