ETHIOPIAN LAUNCHES FREIGHTER SERVICE TO MIAMI AND BOGOTA
August 31, 2018

Ethiopian Airlines has launched a twice-weekly freighter flight from Addis Ababa to Miami and Bogota.

According to the carrier, the flight is operated with a Boeing 777 Freighter, stopping in Lagos and Zaragoza on the way to Miami and Bogota, and returning to Addis Ababa via Liege.

“We are very pleased to see Zaragoza, Miami and Bogota joining our fast-expanding freighter network in the Americas,” said Tewolde GebreMariam, group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines. “With the new service, Ethiopian will carry Inditex high-end textile products from Zaragoza to the Americas. In line with our strategic roadmap, Vision 2025, we will keep on expanding our cargo destinations worldwide, thereby facilitating trade and economic growth among different regions of the world.”

The Ethiopian Cargo & Logistics Services division currently serves over 44 international destinations in Africa, the Gulf, Middle East, Asia, the Americas and Europe. Its air cargo terminal at the Addis Ababa hub is the largest in Africa and has an annual capacity of approximately 1 million tonnes. Ethiopian Cargo operates a fleet of two 757Fs and seven 777Fs.

“We proudly welcome Ethiopian Airlines and its new cargo service to Miami-Dade County,” said Carlos A. Gimenez, mayor of Miami-Dade County. “We look forward to the additional revenue, jobs and business ties these new flights will bring to our community.”

So far in 2018, Miami International Airport has also added a weekly freighter service by Southern Air from Hong Kong via Anchorage, a second weekly freighter frequency by Turkish Cargo from Istanbul, and a freighter flight from Tokyo by Polar Air Cargo.

The airport recorded its best year ever for freight in 2017, having handled more than 2.2 million tonnes of cargo.

“We applaud Ethiopian Airlines for bringing us MIA’s first cargo destination in Africa,” said Lester Sola, director and CEO of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department. “Our unrivaled position as the international cargo capital of the US and the gateway of the Americas continues to attract new service from key markets in Europe, the Middle East, and now, one of the busiest air cargo hubs in Africa.”
