February 14, 2019

Japan Airlines’ ground-handling subsidiary JAL Ground Service Co., Ltd. is to introduce a wearable robotic device for its airport and cargo personnel.

According to JGS, it will purchase 20 MODEL Y devices from robotics company ATOUN Inc. and allocate 10 each to Haneda and Narita Airports.

The powered wearable device supports the lower half of the body and will support workers when they handle cargo or sort baggage, amid growing volumes and an ageing population. This will improve productivity and help reduce any physical stress that may occur over time on airport personnel.

The device was tested by select members of JGS staff prior to the order.

JGS is considering implementing the gear at other regional airports throughout Japan.

The two companies are also collaborating to create a new product to provide additional support for the arm, according to JGS.
