United Airlines entered an agreement with Boeing for a firm order of 25 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft for delivery in 2023.

The carrier also rescheduled delivery of 40 previously ordered 737 MAX aircraft to 2022 and five 737 MAX aircraft into 2023.

“As we plan for the future and the return of demand, we’ve been looking at ways to best position our fleet for the recovery and be in a position to best take advantage of people’s desire to travel,” said Andrew Nocella, United’s chief commercial officer.

The purchase agreement is a vote of confidence for the plane model that was grounded for 20 months after two deadly crashes earlier.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) lifted its ban on the 737 MAX planes in November after the American planemaker made software updates and other changes to the jetliners.

Regulators in the EU, the UAE, Kenya, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Australia already earlier announced they are lifting the safety ban on the Boing 737 MAX models.

“As the end of the pandemic nears and vaccines continue to roll out, today’s fleet announcement helps position us to meet the demand we expect to see in 2022 and 2023 and puts us on a path toward more opportunities for our employees in the future,” wrote Nocella.
