VIETNAM PORTS CONTAINER VOLUMES UP 21% IN FIRST HALF

Container cargoes transported by Vietnamese ports reportedly surged by 21%  in the first half of the year, compared to levels seen in 2020.

 

Vietnamese containers moved more than 14.7 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs)  in the January to June period.

 

The country's export cargo was up 20% to over 4.8 million TEUs, while import cargo rose by 21% to roughly 4.7 million TEUs.

 

Despite the impact of Covid-19, the volume of freight cargo passing through Vietnam's seaports this year exceeded 425 million tonnes, an increase of 6% over the same period in 2020.

 

In the same period, export goods via this route totaled roughly 106 million tonnes, up 9% year on year.

 

Meanwhile, products transhipped within the country totaled around 184 million tonnes during the period under review, up 7% from the same period the previous year.

 

Several Vietnamese seaports also recorded significant gains in containerized cargo volume this year, including Thai Binh (65%), Dong Thap (56%), Quang Ngai (38%), Hai Phong (16%), and Ho Chi Minh City (9%).
