FINNAIR ADDS PUSH FOR CHANGE TO CARGO

Push for Change, an initiative introduced earlier in 2019 to allow Finnair passengers to offset their carbon emissions by investing in sustainable projects, is being expanded to airline’s cargo operations, said Milla Nyholm, manager, marketing and sustainability, for Finnair Cargo. “Environmental conscientious is on the rise, which is why we have expanded the scheme to allow shippers to offset their carbon footprint” said Nyholm, speaking at Transport Logistic in Munich.

Currently, cargo customers can either support a project in Mozambique which hopes to eliminate deforestation and preserve carbon sinks, or purchase biofuel for future use.

“Finnair has been working on environmental matters for a long time, and we wanted to be able to invite our customers to join us on this journey. Together we can do more,” said Nyholm.

Ahead of the official launch, a customer in Finland has already offset their carbon emissions on a shipment from Delhi. Customers wishing to offset their carbon emissions will be able to book everything online and choose between the two projects. The site is currently under testing, with an official launch expected in the summer.

At the same time, Finnair Cargo announced that Mikko Tainio, currently managing director of Finnair Kitchen, will be taking over as managing director effective August 1. Tainio will also become a member of Finnair’s operations leadership team. Tainio replaces Janne Tarvainen, who leaves Finnair to take over as managing director of Nordic Regional Airlines.

“We are delighted to welcome Mikko into the team and into the fantastic world of Air Cargo,” said Fredrik Wildtgrube, head of global sales for Finnair Cargo.

“I am happy to see the great work that’s been done by the Finnair Cargo team in recent years, particularly the ambitious transformation of working practices and successful expansion of COOL terminal operations. I look forward to continuing the journey with the team towards achieving 1 million daily cargo kilos and sharpening the competitive edge that new technologies and processes give us,” Tainio said in a press release.
