Several cargo flights from Hong Kong have been cancelled on August 5 as city-wide protests, which have been ongoing for nine weeks, forced the city to shut down, affecting some rail and airline services.

Hong Kong International Airport's website showed that six freight departures have been cancelled: SpiceJet bound for Kolkata, Nippon Cargo Airlines (NCA) for Tokyo, Emirates scheduled to fly to Dubai, Polar Air Cargo bound for Anchorage and Cincinnati, UPS for Anchorage and Ontario, and Etihad  bound for Dubai.

Seven arrivals have also been cancelled affecting Hong Kong Airlines freight operation from Shaghai, NCA from Tokyo, two Emirates freight service from Dubai, Hong Kong Air Cargo from Ho Chi Minh, Etihad from Dubai, and SpiceJet from Guwahati, India.

Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon said in a statement that it does not foresee any freighter cancellations, although the airline expects the freighter operation to be affected by minor delays on certain flights. 

The effects of the protests, sparked by a now-suspended extradition bill, on cargo operations spilled over until August 6, with seven arrival cargo flights and seven departure flights suspended.

The HKIA website showed that the following arrival freight operations have been cancelled: China Cargo Airlines from Shanghai, Cargolux Airlines from Luxembourg and Bahrain, two Airbridge Cargo Airline from Moscow, EVA Air from Taipei, Hong Kong Air Cargo from Zhengzhou, and SpiceJet from Guwahati.

The the world’s busiest cargo airport also said the following departures have been suspended: Emirates bound for Dubai, SpiceJet for Kolkata, China Cargo Airlines to Shanghai, Hong Kong Air Cargo to Zhengzhou, Cargolux Airlines bound for Ashgabat, Budapest and Luxembourg, Southern Air to Anchorage and Cincinnati, and EVA Air to Taipei.
