Singapore Changi Airport saw its cargo volume drop by 38.3% in April due to the continuing impact of the coronavirus crisis on airline operations.

The airport — deemed one of the busiest cargo airports in the world — said it handled 96,500 tonnes of cargo last month, declining from the 149,000 tonnes recorded in March.

That month, Changi Airport said air travel demand remained significantly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, with all regions recording steep declines in March adding that for the last seven days of the month, passenger movements at Changi Airport were 98% lower than they were a year ago.

The fall in airfreight throughput during that month was also impacted by the decrease in belly hold capacity on passenger flights as both import and export flows have also seen contraction.

In April, Changi Airport handled just 25,200 passengers, recording a steep decline of 99.5% year-on-year. In March 2020, it handled 1.65 million passenger movements, already a decrease of 70.7% compared to the same period last year. 

Aircraft movements in April also declined by 87.7% to just 3,870.
