CONTAINER VOLUME AT MAJOR CHINESE PORTS UP 4.4% IN EARLY AUGUST

Container volume at eight major Chinese ports like Port of Shanghai — the world's busiest container port in 2020 — Port of Tianjin, the largest port in Northern China and the main maritime gateway to Beijing, Ningbo-Zhoushan, Xiamen, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen increased 4.4% in early August dragged by the recent Covid-19 cases outbreak in some of these major ports.

 

Container volume also increased by 9.2%, although domestic volumes dropped by 8.9%.

 

Cargo throughput at major coastal Chinese ports was up by 0.6% year-on-year, while the international trade cargo volume declined by 2.3% during the period.

 

Crude oil shipments at major coastal ports dropped 2.5% in early August. Metal ore shipments at these main Chinese ports also edged slightly by 0.9% — with ports of Ningbo-Zhoushan and Rizhao showing over 20% growth year-on-year.

 

For the period cargo throughput at the ports of Nanjing, Wuhan, and Chongqing — major Yangtze river gateways — was up 2.9% and 0.4% respectively.

 

Port of Chongqing is the biggest river port in the southwest of China.
