The total cargo volume at the Port of Oakland increased by 11.4% in the first half of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020, and year-end estimates do not predict a drop in US imports.

The Port Authority said due to increased US imports, it moved 1.3 million TEUs in the first semester of this year, and that if the current rate is maintained, it could surpass 2.6 million TEUs for the first time.

It noted that for the fifth month in a row, the volume of containerized imports at Oakland has climbed year over year.

"We've never seen this level of activity and based on the outlook we are preparing for," said Port of Oakland Maritime Director Bryan Brandes. "Our challenge is to serve customers who expect us to handle their cargo efficiently."

Port authorities also project a new peak possibly between August and November when retailers and distributors start stocking up inventory for Christmas.

Port of Oakland noted that in June, imports increased by 15% compared to the same period last year, while exports, also expanded 0.8% in the period.
