Modern Terminals has announced its sustainability strategy, highlighted by decarbonisation goals in its own operations to eliminate direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030, and to becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
In a statement, it noted that the strategy includes long-term goals for all its five sustainability pillars – Corporate Governance, People, Health & Safety, Environment, and Community Involvement – providing a clear roadmap for the ongoing sustainability journey of the container terminal operator with facilities in Hong Kong and Western Shenzhen.

We see that climate change is a big issue and believe it is important for Modern Terminals to take bold actions to help address the issue. Our strategy sets the future path of our sustainability efforts so as to optimise the results and the positive impact we create,” said Horace Lo, Group managing director of Modern Terminals Limited.
Modern Terminals decarbonisation strategy
To achieve the decarbonisation goals, Modern Terminals said it will introduce renewable energy at its facilities and plans to electrify all container handling equipment and yard vehicles.
A total of 291 solar panels will also be installed on the rooftop of Modern Terminals' Warehouse Building, with an area of approximately 1,000 square metres.
Modern Terminals said the installation is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter this year. Upon completion, the system will generate about 140,000 units (kWh) of electricity each year and can help reduce 51,800 kg of carbon emission per annum.
It said other long-term goals cover material topics including technology and automation, supply chain management, green finance, diversity and inclusion, health, safety and wellness for employees and contractor workers, and community engagement.
“It is a team effort. Besides having a detailed work plan with owners and working teams for each goal, it is crucial for us to have internal communications to engage our staff as well as our contractor workers as they are all key to our success in reaching our goals,” Lo added.
