Container volume at eight major Chinese ports like Port of Shanghai — the world's busiest container port in 2020 — Port of Tianjin, the largest port in Northern China and the main maritime gateway to Beijing, Ningbo-Zhoushan, Xiamen, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen reported growth in late February.

 

The ports saw an 18.1% increase in volumes year-on-year as factories resumed work after the Lunar New Year holidays.

 

For the same period, export container volume increased 26.7% while domestic volume dropped 2%. Among these, the port of Shanghai, Ningbo-Zhoushan, and Xiamen posted a growth rate of over 30%.

 

Cargo throughput at major coastal Chinese ports was also up 10.2% during the period and export cargo throughput also rose by 2.1%.

 

For the period cargo throughput at the ports of Nanjing, Wuhan, and Chongqing — major Yangtze river gateways — was up 19.9% and 13.2% respectively.

 

Port of Chongqing is the biggest river port in the southwest of China.
