ABS SETTING UP ELECTRIFICATION CENTRE IN SINGAPORE
September 13, 2023

ABS, a classification society, is establishing a new global centre in Singapore aimed at promoting electrification and decarbonization of the maritime sector.

The ABS Electrification Center will support electrification projects for shipowners, shipyards and other maritime interests in Asia-Pacific and across the world.

The centre's work will involve research, development, design review, and rule formulation, as well as new construction and retrofit projects.

The ABS Electrification Center will also support the development of electric harbour craft — a key decarbonisation goal for the Port of Singapore.

"While many in the shipping industry will be equipped to use alternative fuels, additional alternative energy options, particularly electrification, are needed to help the industry achieve net zero by 2050," said John McDonald,  president and COO of ABS.

Teo Eng Dih, chief executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), welcomed the establishment of the ABS Electrification Center in Singapore.

"We welcome the set-up of the ABS Electrification Centre in Singapore. This complements our efforts to electrify the domestic craft sector, adding to the local knowledge and expertise on evolving electrification technologies and standards," the MPA chief said.

"ABS' contribution will help to increase the vibrancy of our marine electrification ecosystem and community, serving the needs of Singapore and our region," Teo Eng Dih added.
