SHANGHAI INT'L PORT GROUP RECORDS 5.3% VOLUME INCREASE IN H1
September 4, 2023

During the first half of 2023, Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) recorded a 5.3% increase in container throughput, handling 23.74 million TEUs for the period.

The volume figure for the first half of the year showed Shanghai remaining as the world's largest container port.

Yangshan Port in Shanghai — the biggest container port in the world right now — handled 11.9 million TEUs, representing 50.1% of total container volume.

Meanwhile, cargo throughput at SIPG was up 13.6% year-on-year to 276 million tonnes in the January to June 2023 period.

Revenue and net profit at the port were down by double-digits, however.

Port revenue declined 19.82% to RMB16.1 billion, while net profit dropped by 32.24% during the period to RMB7.3 billion.

SIPG said, "There was growth pressure from port throughput in the first half due to the slowdown of China’s import and export."

"Global international hub ports' competition will be intensified in the coming days and we need to strengthen multi-modal transportation between hinterland and ports and jointly promote high-quality development of the integration of regional ports, as well as the digitalization, automation and technology innovation," it added.
