Emirates SkyCargo has transported its 35,000th tonne of cool-chain shipments through its SkyCentral freighter hub at Al Maktoum International Airport.
According to Emirates, the most common types of temperature-sensitive products shipped through SkyCentral include pharmaceuticals, fresh fruits, fresh vegetables and seafood. Since SkyCentral was formally inaugurated in November 2015, SkyCargo has flown almost 6,000 tonnes of sustainably sourced seafood, such as skipjack tuna from the Maldives and American lobster from Boston.
The SkyCentral hub, which has 15,000 square metres of temperature-controlled storage space, uses protective skins that protect cargo and keep them cold and cool dollies that are capable of maintaining temperatures of as low as –20°C.
Located 77km from Dubai International Airport at the Logistics District in Dubai South (the recently rebranded Dubai World Central), SkyCentral is the base for Emirates’ freighter fleet of two Boeing 747-400ERFs and 13 Boeing 777Fs.
