The Japanese and US authorities agreed in February 2016 to give the two countries five daytime slot pairs and one evening slot pair each at Haneda Airport, as opposed to the current four evening slot pairs each country has.

In April 2016, the Japanese transport ministry granted three daytime slot pairs and the evening slot pair to ANA, while Japan Airlines received the remaining two daytime slot pairs.

ANA already flies from Haneda to Honolulu, Los Angeles and Vancouver.

Mexico City, which will be ANA’s 42nd direct international destination, will be served daily with Boeing 787-8s from Tokyo Narita.

The airline said that Japanese direct investment in Mexico had grown by approximately 2.7 times since 2010, and that the number of Japanese-owned companies with operations in the country had approximately doubled. Economic ties are particularly strong in the automobile industry.

Preparations for the direct flight have been ongoing since July 2015 when a sale office opened in Mexico City, according to ANA.

The only other airline flying between Mexico and Japan is Aeromexico, which operates four Mexico City-Narita flights a week, also with 787-8s.
