Munich Airport said air traffic continued to grow in 2023, with air cargo volumes rising up year-on-year.

In a statement, the German airport — which is one of the largest cargo hubs in Europe — said in 2023, freight volumes rose by seven percent to a total of around 280,000 metric tons.

"The strong traffic development at Munich Airport also had a positive effect on air freight," the airport said.

Air freight and air mail totalled 277,199 metric tonnes in 2023, up from 258,857 metric tonnes in 2022.

Of this, air freight reached 285, 346 metric tonnes from 266,779 metric tonnes.

Meanwhile, for 2023, passenger numbers rose by five million year-on-year to a total of 37 million — reaching around 80% of the record level from the pre-crisis year 2019.

The number of aircraft movements rose by six percent compared to 2022 to more than 300,000 take-offs and landings.

In 2023, the airport was regularly served by 99 airlines, nine of which were active solely in air freight.

"The strong growth in passenger numbers in 2023 shows how well the aviation industry is recovering in Munich. This positive development is a sign of the high demand for air travel among the public and the business community alike," said Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport.
