THAI AIRWAYS JOINS CAMPAIGN AGAINST ILLEGAL IVORY TRANSPORT
March 25, 2015

Thai Airways has announced that it is joining the campaign against illegal transport of ivory on all Thai flights and is supporting the Royal Thai Government’s policy to stop the sale of ivory.

Poonsak Chumchuay, managing director, cargo mail and commercial department, said that even though domestic ivory can still be bought and sold in Thailand, the import and export of ivory and ivory products are strictly prohibited in accordance with the international agreement under the pact drawn by CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Thai has joined in the fight against the trade of ivory by publicizing information on illegal ivory trade and communicating that the company does not support publicizing ivory products through its communication channels, it said in a statement.

Thai is in close coordination with Customs and concerned functions at Suvarnabhumi Airport near Bangkok for strict inspection of departing flights and transit shipments, especially flights to and from risk areas. This action supports serious efforts being made to solve the problem of illegal ivory shipments, and the policy is implemented by all Thai Cargo offices worldwide in order to seek a permanent solution.

Currently, several countries are working towards protecting wildlife, which includes the illegal trade of ivory. As the national carrier of Thailand, Thai prohibits the transport of ivory on all flights, which shows its continued dedication to social responsibility, the company said in a statement.
