SkyTeam Cargo, the world's only air cargo alliance, has introduced the latest paper-based carton pallet as a replacement for wood, plastic, Euro and Block pallets.
Depending on size, SkyTeam Cargo's carton pallets weigh 10 - 15kg less than wooden and plastic pallets. They are made from 94% recycled fibres, are humidity resistant and comply with ISPM 15 standards.
In a statement, SkyTeam noted that, unlike Euro pallets, the new carton pallets could be used multiple times, depending on handling and usage, reducing wood consumption, waste and emissions.
TRIP&CO developed the latest version of the carton pallet, which is EASA part 21G approved. Last year, SkyTeam Cargo members Air France Cargo and KLM Cargo successfully trialled the pallet during SkyTeam's annual flight challenge.
This challenge brings together global airlines on a shared mission to find new ways to cut aviation’s footprint across all areas of operations, including cargo.
"SkyTeam Cargo has been delighted to meet with industry partners during air cargo China to demonstrate how this revolutionary pallet could make a positive impact on their business," said John Engelaan, VP of SkyTeam Cargo.
"The latest version of our carton pallet not only cuts costs but also has the potential to significantly cut emissions — something the air cargo industry is striving towards. Substituting one-way Euro pallets for SkyTeam's multiple-use carton pallets could reduce the industry’s wood consumption, weight and emissions," he added.
