FRANKFURT AIRPORT CARGO VOLUME DECLINES IN APRIL

Frankfurt Airport saw a slight decline in cargo throughput in April 2025, with airfreight and airmail volumes dropping 1.1% year-on-year to 169,563 metric tons.

Compared to March 2025, when Frankfurt Airport handled 184,679 metric tons of cargo—a 3.2% year-on-year increase—April saw a decline in throughput.

Meanwhile, April's cargo volume declined 4.9% compared to the same month in pre-COVID-2019, reflecting a lingering gap in recovery.

Month-on-month, April's volume is also lower than the 184,679 metric tons recorded in March 2025. It is, however, slightly higher than the 152,069 metric tonnes recorded in February and the 148,321 metric tonnes recorded by the airport in January.

Aircraft movements in April climbed by 4.3% to 39,168 takeoffs and landings. Maximum takeoff weights (or MTOWs) were around 2.4 million metric tons, an expansion of 3.2% year-on-year.

The March figures benefited from steady demand despite strike-related disruptions, whereas April’s dip suggests a shift in market conditions or operational challenges.

Fraport — which operates Europe's busiest cargo hub — said passenger traffic, however, continued its upward trend in both months, reinforcing the airport’s strong recovery trajectory.

While cargo dipped, passenger traffic surged, with 5.3 million travellers passing through the airport, marking a 4.8% increase compared to the same month last year.
