Vienna Airport reported an 8% increase in air freight volumes in the first quarter, alongside growth in pharmaceutical shipments.
The airport increased its tonnage by 5,222 tons to a total of 73,280 tons in the first three months of 2025 over the comparable period last year.
The ongoing positive development this year also continued in April.
Vienna Airport, strategically located in Europe as a key cargo hub for Central and Eastern Europe, reported 26,999 tons of freight in April, a 13% increase from the same month in 2024.
"Growth in belly cargo on passenger aircraft compensated for the slight decline in volumes handled by cargo-only aircraft," the airport said in a statement.
In the first quarter, Vienna Airport recorded 31,477 tons of belly cargo, marking a significant increase of 16%. In April, a plus of even 17% with a total of 11,421 tons was recorded.
Increased pharma volumes
Vienna Airport noted that the tonnage handled in the Pharma Handling Center during the first quarter also increased by 3% to a total of 913 tons.
Vienna Airport is one of the few airports in Central and Eastern Europe to offer a specialized Pharma Handling Center, ensuring professional transport with an uninterrupted cold chain.
Vienna Airport reported 37,946 tons of imported air freight in the first quarter, a 1% increase from the previous year, highlighting varied trends in imports and exports.
Meanwhile, 35,334 tons of cargo were transported via Vienna to global markets, representing a 16% increase compared to the first quarter of 2024.
Vienna Airport noted that it is firmly anchored in the European network of air cargo road feeder services. The most important consumer and business centres in Central and Eastern Europe are accessed within 24 or 48 hours.
