The new daily flight is operated with a Boeing 777-200LR, which is capable of carrying up to 15 tonnes of cargo in its belly.

“Our new daily service to Fort Lauderdale will significantly enhance South Florida’s commercial and cultural connections,” said Hubert Frach, divisional senior vice president of commercial operations in the Western Hemisphere. “Emirates is proud to connect people across the globe and today’s inaugural flight illustrates the reach of our global network and the potential tourism and trade opportunities of our daily service.”

According to SkyCargo, the freight division of Emirates, the top exports from Fort Lauderdale include healthcare equipment, pharmaceuticals, electronics, aerospace components, aviation and shipping spares, perishables and mail, while imports will include pharmaceuticals, aerospace parts, electronics and electrical goods.

Mark Gale, CEO and director of aviation at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, said that the airport was proud to welcome Emirates to Broward County.

“This new service to Dubai, and ultimately to the rest of the world, will provide our community with tremendous business and travel opportunities,” he said. “With an estimated annual economic impact to our region of more than US$100 million and approximately 1,000 new jobs as a direct and indirect result of Emirates’ arrival, we are confident this new service will mark the beginning of many more great things to come.”

Fort Lauderdale is the carrier’s second destination in Florida after Orlando, which was launched in September 2015. Elsewhere in the country, Emirates operates passenger flights to Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington DC, as well as freighter services to Atlanta, Chicago, Columbus, Houston, Los Angeles and New York. The carrier offers over 2,000 tonnes of cargo capacity from the US per week.

Emirates first launched US operations by flying to New York in 2004, and has transported approximately 740,000 tonnes of cargo between Dubai and the US since then.
