The Zaragoza Goods Terminal has consolidated its Canal Frío railway service transporting temperature-controlled containers between the terminal and the Port of Barcelona.
The service began operations in December 2016 and is operated by APM Barcelona Railway Terminals. It is operated four times a week but is expected to be upgraded to daily in the near future.
According to the port, the terminal launched the rail service to respond to the logistics needs of the food industry in Northeast Spain. Major customers include meat and vegetable producers based in the Aragon region, of which Zaragoza is the capital.
The service will initially operate exclusively with frozen goods but the terminal plans to expand it in the medium term to fresh fruit and vegetables as well as wine.
The Zaragoza Goods Terminal opened in 2001 and handled 300,000 TEUs in 2016, 85% of which came from or were destined for the Port of Barcelona, located approximately 300km to the west.
The terminal currently serves Barcelona with 22 weekly connections, according to the port.
