Finnair will use solar power for its new COOL Nordic Cargo Hub at Helsinki Airport.

According to Finnair, power will be produced by 1,200 solar panels installed on the roof of the facility. Each panel is capable of producing up to 260W of energy, amounting to approximately 265MWh of energy per year.

The solar energy generated will account for more than 10% of the total annual energy consumption at the cargo hub.

“Sustainability is important for Finnair Cargo customers, as well as their customers,” said Janne Tarvainen, managing director of Finnair Cargo. “Our new cargo hub features advanced automation technology and has temperature-controlled areas for pharmaceuticals and other perishable products, and the energy produced by the new solar panels supports the overall efficiency of the entire cargo terminal.”

The new cargo terminal is scheduled to launch operations in phases from October 2017, with full operations to begin in January 2018, according to Finnair.
