Hapag-Lloyd has taken delivery of the 15,000 TEU Al Jmeliyah from the Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea.

According to Hapag-Lloyd, Al Jmeliyah is the last in a series of 17 newbuilds contracted to HSHI by UASC in the summer of 2013, consisting of 11 15,000 TEU and six 19,900 TEU ships, the first of which was delivered in 2015. Following the merger of UASC with Hapag-Lloyd at the end of May 2017, these units are now all part of the Hapag-Lloyd fleet of 219 ships.

“With this newbuild, our fleet – one of the youngest and most modern in the industry with an average age of just 7.1 years – is now complete,” said Anthony Firmin, chief operating officer of Hapag-Lloyd. “We have no plans to order any more newbuilds in the foreseeable future.”

Al Jmeliyah, which means “the beautiful one” in Arabic, is 368 metres long and 51 metres wide. It is equipped with a waste-heat-recovery system and a connection for shore-based power, and is certified as LNG-ready.

Al Jmeliyah will be deployed on the FE4 service of THE Alliance, connecting Asia and North Europe and joining sister ship Afif, which was delivered in July, according to Hapag-Lloyd.
