Finnair Cargo has launched Finnair Cargo Eye, its new air cargo monitoring tool, at the Slush startup event in Helsinki.

According to the carrier, Finnair Cargo Eye is an Internet of Things solution which will transform the airline’s cargo operations and value creation for customers by providing an overall panoramic view of what is happening and where everything is. It integrates multiple data sources, transactional ERP data and IoT sensors into a presentation layer with a visual layout for operational steering that will help Finnair’s new Cargo Control Center monitor and steer cargo flows more effectively in real time across Finnair’s network.

“We are happy to present Cargo Eye at Slush, and invite startups to innovate with us for improved productivity and establishing fully transparent E2E value chains for proactive cargo network steering,” said Janne Tarvainen, managing director of Finnair Cargo. “Slush is a great event to look for potential new partners for IoT enabled transformation.”

Cargo Eye provides end-to-end visibility of Finnair’s operations and in the future will also enable more comprehensive transparent real-time information for customers. It is a platform for real-time business steering and identifies exceptions that need to be addressed. The tool was created with smart solutions provider Qoco Systems and is integrated with, and collects data from, SkyChain, Finnair’s cargo management system, Sensire sensors that monitor the location, temperature and humidity of shipments, and Kaltiot trackers that monitor the location of Finnair Cargo’s ground transport vehicles and the conditions of shipments during transport.

“We see Cargo Eye as an indispensable management tool,” said Kari Saarikoski, digital transformation lead at Finnair Cargo. “For example, the CCC in the COOL cargo terminal can look at one screen and see where every truck and plane is carrying seafood or pharmaceuticals, get updated on its arrival and connecting transport, monitor its contents and temperature, and be prepared to shift ground resources to where they are needed most in anticipation of delivery.”

Cargo Eye has been under development since early this year. Finnair Cargo is looking into how critical data could be shared directly with customers, as well as the development of cloud-connected applications to run on mobile devices.

“The events of the past year only validate our efforts to transition away from trying to supervize and control every detail to managing-by-exception,” said Jukka Glader, head of operations at Finnair Cargo. “Cargo Eye helps us do just that. Our CCC now has a powerful tool giving it a simplified, holistic awareness of all our operations. As alerts arise, we can selectively go deeper into a specific system to resolve the issue. This gives us much better resource management. We also see the visualization power of Cargo Eye assisting our sales and managements teams.”
