SPIRIT SIGNS MOU FOR 100 A320NEOS

Airbus and Spirit Airlines have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the purchase of up to 100 A320neo aircraft.

The Florida-based ultra-low-cost carrier said it is placing firm orders for a mix of A319neo, A320neo, and A321neo jets to meet its future fleet requirements.

The orders will be delivered through 2027.

“The additional aircraft will be used to support Spirit’s growth as we add new destinations and expand our network across the US, Latin America, and the Caribbean. We look forward to working with our valued partners at Airbus to finalize our agreement,” said Spirit Airlines’ president and CEO Ted Christie.

Spirit is a fast-growing ultra-low-cost carrier in the Americas, based in Miramar, Florida.

Featuring the widest single-aisle cabin in the sky, the best-selling A320neo Family, comprising the A319neo, A320neo, and A321neo, deliver at least 20% reduced fuel burn as well as 50% less noise compared to previous generation aircraft, powered by new generation engines and Sharklets.

Spirit Airlines currently operates in at least 400 scheduled passenger flights daily to more than 60 destinations throughout the United States and in the Caribbean, Mexico, Latin America, and South America.

Meanwhile, as of end September 2019, the A320neo family of European planemaker, Airbus, had received more than 6,650 firm orders from nearly 110 customers worldwide.

This is the first order of an American carrier to Airbus following the tariffs imposed by the US to the EU following a World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling over aircraft subsidies.

The US imposed a 10% tariffs on some of the planes it offers to US airlines after the WTO ruling last week.
