CHINA'S RAIL FREIGHT VOLUME HITS RECORD HIGH IN APRIL

China's rail cargo volume rose 10.1% year-on-year and hit a record high in April.

 

A total of 330 million tons of cargo was transported on China's railways during the month, 30.18 million tons more than that in the same period last year, state media reported, citing data from the China State Railway Group Co Ltd (China Railway).

 

In the period, 6.03 million tons of agricultural supplies such as chemical fertilizers and seeds were transported, surging 47.6% year-on-year.

 

Coal for power generation carried on railways totaled 110 million tons last month, up 12.1% year-on-year and ensuring coal storage in 363 power supply plants for 28.6 days.

 

Transport via land-sea trade corridor 

 

Rail cargo transport through the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor increased by 19.6% to 63,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit containers in April. The China-Laos Railway carried 132,000 tons of goods for import and export.

 

Meanwhile, China's commercial cargo transport also expanded in the first quarter, according to state media, citing data from the Ministry of Transport.

 

The country's commercial freight volume went up 1.5% year-on-year to 11.29 billion tons in the period.

 

A total of 8.15 billion tons of road cargo were transported in Q1, marginally up by 0.4% from the same period last year.

 

Xinhua said China's water freight volume amounted to 1.93 billion tons in the same period, climbing 5.2% from one year earlier.
