Bolloré Logistics has announced the launch of its latest offering to reduce the carbon impact of ocean shipments through the use of biofuel.

The announcement came as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations aim to reduce ocean freight CO2e emissions by 70% in 2050 compared to 2008.

"Bolloré Logistics launches SEAalternative, an offer to reduce the carbon impact of ocean shipments thanks to the use of biofuel, one of the main levers to face this challenge," the statement said.

It noted that the SEAalternative solution — which was previously available through two carriers — is now available on any trade lanes and any carriers for one exceptional shipment or on a contractual basis.

It can guarantee up to an 84% reduction in CO2e emissions compared to conventional shipping, with respect to the physical limit as per Smart Freight Center guidelines.

Bolloré said SEAalternative utilises biofuel derived from used cooking oil, excluding palm oil. This sustainable solution relies on an end-to-end seamless, and verified process.

It also allocates the biofuel environmental attributes to the client's shipment depending on the need and provides quarterly declarations.

Carbon savings are then detailed in the client's CO2e dashboard and audited annually by a third party.

SEAalternative offer forms part of Bolloré Logistics' CSR Programme "Powering Sustainable Logistics", launched in 2018, to provide sustainable supply chain solutions to its clients.

"The new GHG emission reduction targets for Bolloré Logistics, in line with SBTi are to reduce by 22% absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from downstream transportation and distribution by 2030 from a 2022 base year.
