LIEGE AIRPORT RECORDS 13% CARGO VOLUME INCREASE IN APRIL

Liege Airport reported a 13% year-on-year increase in cargo volumes last month, even as it continues to phase out night flights as part of its sustainability initiatives.

The Belgian airport — one of Europe's busiest cargo hubs — handled 95,025 tons of cargo in April, compared to the 83,813 tons recorded during the same period in 2023.

Liege added that the number of cargo aircraft movements in April also rose by 14% to 2196 compared with 1922 during the same period in 2023.

"We are particularly pleased with the growth in volumes at Liege Airport's logistics and multimodal hub. For the first four months of this year, we recorded an increase in volumes of 14% compared to the same period in 2023," commented Laurent Jossart, Liege Airport's chief executive.

"It's very encouraging and shows the increasing importance of LGG as Europe's number one freighter hub," Jossart added.

Liege is prioritizing daytime flights and quieter aircraft to support its sustainability plans.

The airport said that in April, the number of daytime movements grew by 21%, while night flights were down by 5% in 2024 compared with 2023.

The estimated number of night flights so far in 2024 is around 11,000, and the number of the noisiest aircraft has decreased from 2,226 in 2023 to 2,103 in 2024.
