HONG KONG AIR CARGO GROWS 4.8% IN MARCH DRIVEN BY MIDDLE EAST, EUROPE
April 21, 2025

Hong Kong International Airport experienced another month of cargo growth in March, propelled by exports and increased volume to and from the Middle East and Europe, despite the recent tariffs announced by the United States.

Cargo throughput at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), which was named the world's busiest cargo hub in 2024, was up 4.8% year-on-year in March to 449,000 tonnes.

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) said this growth was mainly driven by a 5.8% rise in exports.

Last month's cargo volumes were also higher than the 324,000 tonnes recorded in February and the 394,000 tonnes recorded in January 2025.

"Cargo traffic to and from the Middle East and Europe continued to grow the most among key trading regions during the month," AAHK said.

During the month, HKIA recorded 33,240 flight movements, representing an 11.5% year-on-year increase.

Over the first quarter of 2025, cargo traffic saw an increase of 3.2% over the same period last year to approximately 1.17 million tonnes, while flight movements increased by 11.3% to 95,975.

On a 12-month rolling basis, cargo throughput increased by 10.3% year on year to 4.97 million tonnes.

AAHK said that in March, HKIA also expanded its aviation network with Cathay Pacific, West Air, and Vietnam Airlines launching new routes to and from Hyderabad, Dali and Ho Chi Minh City, respectively, further strengthening Hong Kong's connectivity with Mainland China and overseas destinations.
