CHINA AIRLINES ORDERS FOUR BOEING 777-8 FREIGHTERS TO EXPAND CARGO FLEET
May 8, 2025

China Airlines has placed a firm order for four Boeing 777-8 Freighters, becoming the first Taiwan carrier to add the fuel-efficient 777X to its fleet.

The airline plans to leverage the widebody freighter's increased payload capacity and extended range on long-haul routes to North America and Europe.

"As a long-time operator of the 777-300ER and 777 Freighter, we are excited to welcome Boeing's newest 777X family into our world-class fleet," said Kao Shing-Hwang, chairman of China Airlines.

"The 777-8 Freighter's fuel efficiency and range will enable us to maintain a leadership position in air cargo, supporting our long-term sustainability goals."

China Airlines' order, which was booked in March 2025 and initially posted as unidentified on Boeing's orders and deliveries website, includes options for five 777-9 passenger jets and four additional 777-8 Freighters.

The deal positions China Airlines among a select group of global carriers investing in both passenger and freighter variants of the 777X family.

"With the 747-sized payload capability of the 777-8 Freighter, along with a 30% improvement in fuel efficiency and emissions, China Airlines is making a forward-looking investment in its cargo operations," said Brad McMullen, Boeing senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing.

"We're proud to continue our partnership with China Airlines, which traces back nearly 60 years, and look forward to delivering these new aircraft adorned with their iconic plum blossom livery."

China Airlines' fleet renewal strategy also includes Boeing 787 Dreamliners, further strengthening its network expansion plans.

The airline joins a growing list of carriers investing in next-generation aircraft to improve operational efficiency and sustainability.
