NEW SEA LINK DRIVES 50% GROWTH IN CHINA-PERU TRADE
October 17, 2025

The Chancay–Shanghai shipping route moved 154,000 tonnes of cargo worth 3.97 billion yuan (approximately US$559 million) in the first three quarters of 2025, driving a 56.9% year-on-year increase in Shanghai's trade with Peru to 13.42 billion yuan, according to Shanghai Customs.

Compared to the first half of the year when the route handled 78,000 tonnes valued at 1.72 billion yuan, the latest figures signal rapid growth, reinforcing the corridor's role as a "new bridge" for China–Peru trade.

The route also marked a milestone with the arrival of the first batch of exhibits for the upcoming 8th China International Import Expo at Shanghai's Yangshan Port.

Shipped from Peru's Chancay Port, the consignment included 764 items such as alpaca dolls and pottery crafts. It's the first time expo goods have traveled via this corridor since its launch in late 2024, linking Latin America and Asia.

Chancay Port — a deep-water facility and South America's first smart, green port — is a flagship Belt and Road project that has cut the sea journey between China and Peru from over a month to roughly 23 days, while reducing shipping costs by at least 20%.
