The Port of New York and New Jersey (Port of NY/NJ) finished 2025 as the third‑busiest container gateway in the U.S., handling 8.9 million TEUs as cargo volumes continued to stabilize across major ports in the region.
It remained the nation's second‑busiest port for loaded containers as the agency's vehicular crossings continued to post strong volumes in line with 2024 levels and pre‑pandemic 2019 activity.
Across 2025, the Port of NY/NJ moved 5,955,798 loaded TEUs, a 2.8% increase from 2024.
In December, the seaport handled 435,352 loaded TEUs, a 5.6% decline from December 2024.
Total throughput for the month reached 652,471 TEUs, down 5.2% from the 688,386 TEUs recorded in December 2024, reflecting seasonal softening and modest declines in both import and export flows.
Loaded imports fell 5.4% year‑on‑year in December to 329,914 TEUs, compared with 348,564 TEUs a year earlier. For the full year, the port imported 4,513,966 TEUs (2,486,447 containers), a 1.7% increase from 2024.
Loaded exports totaled 105,438 TEUs (56,225 containers) in December, a 6.3% decline from 112,485 TEUs (60,033 containers) in December 2024. Over 2025, the port exported 1,441,832 TEUs (771,865 containers), a 6.5% increase from the previous year.
Meanwhile, 36,099 autos moved through the port in December, a 1.0% decrease from the prior year. Auto volume for 2025 ended 11% lower than in 2024.
