Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) handled 415,000 tonnes of cargo in January, a 5.4% year‑on‑year increase, with all major cargo segments posting growth.
HKIA, which has held the title of the world’s busiest cargo airport for 13 of the past 14 years, said transshipment was the strongest contributor, rising 18.2% to 93,000 tonnes. Traffic to and from Europe, Southeast Asia and the Chinese mainland recorded the largest gains among major markets.
"Cargo throughput continued to gain momentum, with cargo volume growing 5.4% year on year to 415,000 tonnes during the month. All cargo sectors saw growth, with transshipment serving as the primary driver in the month," HKIA announced.
Cargo traffic to and from Europe, Southeast Asia and the Chinese mainland grew the most among key trading regions during the start of 2026.
Month on month, however, January’s cargo volume fell below the 462,000 tonnes handled in December, when peak‑season demand typically lifts throughput. It was also lower than the 486,000 tonnes recorded in November.
For January, the airport recorded 34,445 flight movements, a year‑on‑year increase of 2.4%.
On a 12-month rolling basis, cargo throughput grew by 2.8% to 5.09 million tonnes, while flight movements increased by 7.4% to 395,510.
