PORT OF BARCELONA SETS NEW THROUGHPUT RECORD

The Port of Barcelona set a new record for annual container traffic, having handled more than 2.2 million TEUs in 2016, according to results announced by the port.

“The positive performance of traffic segments shows that we are well-positioned to achieve the goals we set in the Port of Barcelona Third Strategic Plan,” said Sixte Cambra, president of the port.

 

According to the port, 2016’s total throughput represented an increase of 14.5% over 2015 and is the highest over the past decade.

 

Foreign trade amounted to 1,202,007 TEUs. Exports increased by 3.8% year-on-year while imports grew by 8.7%. Transhipment was up 47%.

 

In terms of markets, Asia was the largest trading partner, contributing 77% of the imports and receiving 43% of the exports. China alone accounted for 23% of the containers passing through the port.

 

Net profit for 2016 provisionally stood at €33.2 million (US$35.7 million), according to the port.
