ANA Holdings posted a net income attributable to shareholders of ¥143.8 billion (US$1.31 billion) for the fiscal year 2017, a year-on-year increase of 45.6%, according to annual results released by the company.
According to ANA, the result was an all-time high. Operating revenue was also at a record ¥1.97 trillion (US$17.98 billion), 11.7% more than the fiscal year 2016.
ANA Cargo transported 994,000 tonnes of international freight from April 1, 2017 to March 31, 2018, a year-on-year growth of 4.3%. International freight tonne-kilometres grew by 7.8% to 4.47 billion, while international cargo revenue rose 26.5% to ¥118.0 billion (US$1.1 billion).
The carrier said that automotive parts and electronics bound for North America and Europe showed steady growth. Both volume and revenue from Japan increased year-on-year due to cargo from China and other parts of Asia heading to Japan performing well. ANA was also able to capture cargo going from China to North America.
Domestic cargo revenue decreased by 0.5% to ¥30.7 billion (US$280 million). Tonnage also fell by 3.2%. ANA said that although it has been capturing steady demand for cargo connecting to international routes and has been trying to increase revenues by operating non-scheduled freighter flights on the Okinawa-Haneda to address high demand for flowers from Okinawa, it saw slow demand as a whole throughout the fiscal year. The decrease in home delivery parcel services also led to a weaker year-on-year performance in both volume and revenue.
ANA Cargo said that it would work to capture new demand by enhancing basic quality and utilizing the belly space of its passenger flight route network.
The Japanese economic outlook for the fiscal year 2018 shows a continued, gradual growth due to improvement in the employment environment and the effect of various new government policies, according to ANA.
