Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) reported that cargo volume for 2020 remained "relatively stable" despite the massive hit of the coronavirus on the aviation industry as cargo imports and exports continued to grow. 

The Airport Authority said total cargo throughput last year reached 4.5 million tonnes, representing just a 7% year-on-year decline although passenger figures dropped almost by 88%.

The airport also handled more flights in 2020 at 68,660 cargo flights or an increase of 18.3% compared to 2019.

For December alone, HKIA saw a 0.2% year-on-year drop in cargo handled to 443,000 tonnes. 

The Airport Authority said travel demand remained weak in December as a result of the continuous COVID-19 pandemic. 

Cargo imports and exports continued their strong growth, however, climbing 18% and 8% year on year, respectively although transshipments dropped "significantly" due to shortage of belly capacity on passenger flights, it added.

The AA is deeply grateful for the community’s dedication and resilience in these difficult times, including adapting to new travel requirements, adjusting operations to fluctuating passenger numbers, and implementing new health measures to ensure the safety of staff and passengers," said Vivian Cheung, executive director, Airport Operations for the Airport Authority.

"In 2021, we will continue to work closely with the airport community in managing the continuing challenges and prepare for the recovery of passenger traffic when the pandemic subsides," she added.
