CHINESE CONTAINER PORTS VOLUMES UP 17.8% IN MID-APRIL

Container volume at eight major Chinese ports like Port of Shanghai — the world's busiest container port in 2020 — Port of Tianjin, the largest port in Northern China and the main maritime gateway to Beijing, Ningbo-Zhoushan, Xiamen, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen surged by 17.8% during the April 11-20 period.

 

Export container volume also increased 22.3%, according to data from the China Ports and Harbors Association.

 

The port of Ningbo-Zhoushan saw its volume rise by over 30%; Port of Shangai, Xiamen, and Shenzhen also saw their increases over 20%.

 

Cargo throughput at major coastal Chinese ports was also up 7% from last year, while the international trade cargo volume also rose by 5.8% year-on-year.

 

Crude oil shipments at major coastal ports rose by 2.9% in mid-April, while metal ore shipments at major Chinese ports dipped 0.7% as port inventories rose by 10%.

 

For the same April 11-20 period, cargo throughput at the ports of Nanjing, Wuhan, and Chongqing — three major Yangtze river gateways — was up 11.2% and 21.7% respectively. Port of Chongqing is the biggest river port in the southwest of China.
