JEBEL ALI PORT SAYS "BUSINESS AS USUAL" ACROSS THE PORT FOLLOWING BLAST
July 8, 2021

Jebel Ali Port said the operations are "running seamlessly" at Container Terminal 1 and business is as usual across the port following an explosion from a containership at the port.

In a statement, Dubai Trade — the integrated e-services platform for the logistics and supply chain industry in Dubai — announced the fire that took place late Wednesday in the key Middle Easy port and reported no casualty from the explosion.

"In line with our commitment to protecting the wellbeing of our staff and the crew onboard at Jebel Ali Port and Jebel Ali Free Zone Community, we would like to inform you that a fire was identified at Jebel Ali Port's Container Terminal 1 (CT 1) and contained within 40 minutes," it said.

"The operations are running seamlessly at CT 1 and business is as usual across the port," it added, noting that DP World's Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) team was on the ground and ensured all personnel were safe and no casualties were reported.

Jebel Ali — operated by Dubai-based terminals giant DP World — also said investigations are currently underway to "understand the precise sequence of events."

Dubai Media Office said earlier that fire onboard a containership berthed at Jebel Ali had been brought under control — with media reporting that the blast was felt "up to 25 kilometres from the terminal.

"A fire caused by an explosion within a container on board a ship at Jebel Ali Port has been brought under control; no casualities have been reported," the Dubai Media Office posted on Twitter.

Jebel Ali is the ninth largest port in the world and the biggest in the region. Port authorities said they were "taking all necessary measures to ensure the normal movement of ships in the port continues without any disruption."
