DHL INVESTIGATING FREIGHTER INCIDENT IN COSTA RICA
April 11, 2022

DHL is looking into the recent incident involving one of its freighters that split in half during an emergency landing at Costa Rica's Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO).

On April 8, the DHL cargo jet slid off the SJO runway and broke in half as shown in videos that circulated online.

The incident shut down the airport but the two crew were not injured.

The Boeing-757 freighter had reportedly taken off from the same airport but decided to return after detecting a failure in the hydraulic system.

"We can confirm that a DHL de Guatemala SA B757-200F flight JOS2716 sustained damage upon landing at Juan Santamaria airport in Costa Rica. We are pleased to report that the crew were physically unharmed in the incident," DHL told Asia Cargo News, noting that one crew member underwent medical checks as a precaution.

"We are coordinating with the airport authorities on moving the aircraft from the area near the runway. However, the runway has reopened and operations have now resumed at the airport," it said relating to the update on the same day of the incident.

"DHL's incident response team has been activated and an investigation will be conducted with the relevant authorities to determine what happened. Until then, we are unable to share any further information," DHL added.
