DHL has introduced a daily flight connecting Ibn Battouta airport in Tangier, Morocco to the DHL hub in Leipzig, Germany.
The flight, which is routed via Alicante in Spain, is flown by a Boeing 737-400F and reduces delivery time for Moroccan customers by four hours, according to DHL.
“As the MENA region continues to register sustained economic growth, it is essential that businesses have access to logistics services that keep pace with their expansion into global markets,” said Nour Suliman, CEO of DHL Express Middle East and North Africa. “The new connection from Tangier reinforces our commitment to not just Morocco’s fast-growing industry clusters, but a growing number of businesses across the Maghreb using Morocco as a strategic gateway into European markets.”
Faysal El Hajjami, vice president and manager of the Maghreb area at DHL express, said that heavy government investment in various industries is resulting in massive economic growth in northern Morocco. Projects such as the Tangier Automotive City have driven Morocco’s automotive exports to grow at around 34% in 2014, and GDP to grow from 2.5% in 2014 to 4.5% in the third quarter of 2015.
“DHL itself has seen double-digit growth in trade volumes from Morocco to Europe, largely caused by rapid upscaling of automotive production from northern Morocco to around 400,000 vehicles per annum,” said El Hajjami. “For these industries to keep sustaining Morocco’s revitalized economy, it is imperative that they be supported by highly reliable on-time logistics directly linking the country’s production hubs to demand in Europe and the rest of the world. This latest connection will enable northern Morocco’s industries to further accelerate their growth as well as that of Morocco and the greater Maghreb region.”
The flight will be DHL’s second air service dedicated to Morocco, after its six-times-weekly flight from Casablanca to Europe via Paris-Charles de Gaulle.
