Modern Terminals Limited celebrated its 50th anniversary of operations in Hong Kong on September 5 — marking half a century since the company welcomed its first container vessel on the same day in 1972.
In a brief release, the Hong Kong-based container terminal operator said the first liner "TOKYO BAY" docked at BERTH ONE at dawn 50 years ago and the company also opened its first purpose-built container terminal in the city that year.
Modern Terminals, in the narration of its milestones, noted that in 1975, Terminal 5 started operations and in 1989, Modern Terminals took ownership of Terminal 2.
In 1994, it commenced operations at Terminal 8 West and in 1997, Modern Terminals completed an operation mode change from straddle carriers to RTGs.
Between 1998-1999, Modern Terminals invested in Shekou Container Terminals, and Chiwan Container Terminals in Shenzhen.
In 2004, Modern Terminals also started operations at Terminal 9 (South) and started its sustainability drive in 2005 — also the same year that it commenced the development of DaChan Bay Terminals which welcomed its first container line service in 2008.
In 2019, Modern Terminals marked the formation of the Hong Kong Seaport Alliance (HKSA) to enhance the overall competitiveness of the Port of Hong Kong.
Sustainability goals of Modern Terminals
And in 2021, the company established its Sustainability Strategy with long-term goals including eliminating direct GHG emissions in its operations by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
The senior management of Modern Terminals Limited and shareholders' representative's made a toast to mark the 50th anniversary of the company — and many more years of success.

"In the past 50 years, Modern Terminals has handled over 140 million TEUs at its facilities in Hong Kong," the container terminal operator said.
