PORT OF NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY THE BUSIEST US PORT FOR THE 2ND MONTH
October 26, 2022

The Port of New York and New Jersey was once again the busiest seaport of the United States for the second month in a row, edging out the Port of Los Angeles in California since August.

The Port of New York and New Jersey moved 35% more cargo in September over the pre-pandemic level seen in September 2019.

The seaport also marked its 26th straight month of moving extraordinary record monthly cargo volume.

"The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that for a second consecutive month, the Port of New York and Jersey was yet again the nation's busiest container port," the statement said.

Port of New York and New Jersey marked a historic influx of cargo in August as some shipping lines favoured the East Coast to avoid congestion on the West Coast. Back then, the port of New York and New Jersey processed a combined volume of 843,191 TEUs between imports and exports becoming the U.S. busiest shipping port.

The Port of New York and New Jersey moved 842,219 TEUs in September 2022 which also marked 26 consecutive months of record-high cargo activity.

September 2022 cargo volume increased by 34.8% compared to September 2019.

"At the seaport, 35% more total cargo moved through the port in September 2022 compared to the volume handled during pre-pandemic September 2019 and made the Port of New York and New Jersey the busiest seaport in the nation in September," the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said.

Compared to August, the September cargo activity at the seaport was "essentially flat."

Meanwhile, the heightened volumes at East Coast ports also led to congestion in Savannah, Houston and NY/NJ.
