HAPAG-LLOYD NOTES SUSTAINABILITY MILESTONES IN 2022
March 9, 2023

Hapag-Lloyd recently published its Sustainability Report 2022, outlining the various measures taken in 2022 to move towards its sustainability goals.

The report highlights Hapag-Lloyd's efforts to achieve clean shipping,  with a focus on sustainable fuels and more efficient ships.

Hapag-Lloyd said to pave the way for its ambitious goal of becoming net zero by 2045, it has been strengthening its activities to decarbonise its fleet.

"In 2022, we created a dedicated decarbonisation team and made significant progress in introducing biofuel and making our fleet more efficient", says Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd.

In 2022, Hapag-Lloyd noted that 24 ships ran on advanced biofuel blend, of which more than 120,000 tons were purchased to provide customers with more sustainable transportation options, thus collectively reducing their environmental footprint.

Modernisation program for existing ships

To further reduce emissions, an extensive modernisation program for its existing fleet has started, involving more than 150 vessels during the next five years is also underway.

The ocean carrier noted that installing flow-optimised bulbous bows, drag-reducing underwater paints and newly shaped ship propellers will increase the fleet’s efficiency and reduce fuel consumption, with the first ship already upgraded in September 2022.

"Hapag-Lloyd is consistently exploring further decarbonisation opportunities," it said in a statement.

The shipping line noted that the so-called "internal Green Teams" are working on further reducing energy consumption and emissions in the worldwide offices, thereby aiming at raising awareness of sustainable activities among employees.
