October 20, 2023

Cargo throughput at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) continued to grow in September, increasing by 10% year-on-year to 375,000 tonnes.

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) released the air traffic figures in Hong Kong for September 2023 and reported exports increased by 23.6% increase compared to the same month last year.

It noted that traffic to and from key trading regions in the Middle East, Europe, and North America increased significantly during the month.

Over the first nine months of the year, HKIA saw cargo volume decline slightly by 1.3% year on year to 3.1 million tonnes — as flight movements nearly doubled during the period compared to the year-ago level.

On a 12-month rolling basis, cargo throughput decreased 8.8% to 4.2 million tonnes.

The latest cargo volume increase comes after HKIA continued to post recovery in air cargo, with August numbers showing both year-on-year and month-on-month increases.

In August, the world's busiest cargo hub handled 367,000 tonnes of cargo — up 1.7%, while flight movements recorded a month-on-month increase of 4.3% to 25,055 movements.

Meanwhile, cargo throughput increased by 8.5% on a year-on-year basis, with a 20.5% surge in export volume compared to the same month last year.
