ZIM Integrated Shipping Services (ZIM) announced it is diverting some of its container vessels from passing through the Arabian and Red Seas in response to mounting threats to Israeli-linked ships.

The Israeli international cargo shipping company issued the announcement following attacks on three Israeli-linked vessels last week in the Arabian and Red Seas. This includes the hijacking of the Ray Car Carriers vessel Galaxy Leader by Yemeni Houthi rebels, who took 25 crew members hostage.

In addition, the boxship CMA CGM Symi — which is part of Eastern Pacific Shipping's fleet — was also hit by a drone attack. The Zodiac Maritime-managed tanker Central Park was then briefly hijacked in the same region.

ZIM reaffirmed its continued commitment to serve the East Mediterranean and Israeli ports — but noted that operations to and from these ports will be maintained with the "highest regard for safety protocols" which are essential to safeguarding the interests of all stakeholders.

"In light of the threat to the safe transit of global trade in the Arabian and Red Seas, ZIM is taking temporary proactive measures to ensure the safety of its crews, vessels, and customers' cargo by re-routing some of its vessels," the shipping line said.

"As a result of these measures, longer transit times in the relevant ZIM services are anticipated, though every effort is being made to minimize disruptions."

ZIM noted that despite this, it is closely monitoring the situation to address potential risks and ensure the ongoing safety and efficiency of its operations.

"ZIM will maintain the highest level of service to its customers," it said.
