The Port of Barcelona handled 2,968,767 million TEUs in 2017, a year-on-year increase of 32.3%, according to annual results released by the port.
According to the port, total cargo traffic for the year amounted to over 61 million tonnes, 26% more than in 2016. The performance made Barcelona the fastest-growing seaport in Europe in 2017.
Transhipment containers were the biggest contributor to the growth, having increased by 137%. Import containers grew 8.3%, while import containers were up 2.6%.
China continued to be Barcelona’s largest trading partner, accounting for 44.3% of imports and 11.6% of exports at the port.
The Port of Barcelona posted a net turnover of €167 million (US$208 million) for 2017, a year-on-year increase of 7%.
Profit also rose by 50% to €50 million (US$62 million), according to the port.
