Cargolux has postponed the relocation flight of two beluga whales from China to Iceland.

According to the carrier, the decision was made because of the expected weather conditions in Iceland. In particular, the forecast for rough seas did not allow for the transport of the whales between the mainland and the island of Heimaey, where an open-water sanctuary has been designed for them.

Cargolux, registered charity SEA LIFE Trust and the Icelandic government are working closely to assess suitable options for the belugas’ safe relocation and to carry out the transportation process in the coming weeks.

The plan is for the two beluga whales, Little Grey and Little White, to be transported from Changfeng Ocean World in Shanghai via land, air and sea to Klettsvik Bay in Heimaey, one of the Westman Islands off the southern coast of Iceland. The whole journey is expected to take around 24 hours to complete.

The welfare of the two belugas remains the top priority and the move is dictated by their requirements and well-being, according to Cargolux.
